So we got back from our trip last night, and we had an absolute ball. I'll post more about it and put some of the good pics on here later - if you're on my facebook or myspace I've already put some up there. Right now though, has anyone been to Phuket Zoo before? What an absolute atrocity. We had no idea it would be so bad, I had to hold back tears when I saw the state of some of the poor animals they keep there. They've got monkeys in tiny cement cages with no fresh water, same goes for some of the big cats and goats. We saw a starving tiger pacing up and down in a cage placed right next to deer. Needless to say, the deer were terrified and the tiger was agitated. There were birds of prey in cages so small they could barely spread their wings. We saw ostriches that were almost bald, their feathers had either fallen out from stress or some sort of mite infection. What I found the most disgusting were their 'shows'. The monkey show particulary, what a sad display that was. After the monkey tried to escape the second time from it's 'performance', we had to leave. I can't believe anyone could find it entertaining. And yet people stayed, and we could hear the laughter still as we were leaving. The elephant show wasn't as bad, at least they seemed to enjoy the break from the monotony somewhat. Still, it was fucking lame and it was disturbing we couldn't find anywhere the elephants might be kept after the show was over, I presume they were chained up in the shed we saw prior to the show. I'm amazed it's allowed to stay open? Why hasn't anyone done anything about this? How would one go about trying to do something?? With the level of tourism in Phuket, the potential for the zoo to make big monies is huge. I'd invest if I were mega-rich. I just don't get it.
